We’ve been trying to find a good dog food to feed our dog Lucas. It has not been an easy task. He pretty much likes almost everything, but that’s not the problem.
The problem is that our veterinarian tells us that we’re not feeding him enough, in fact, two different vets have told us that. They also tell us that he’s overweight. And, yes, he is a little chunky. But how does that make any sense? Well, to us, it doesn’t make any sense at all. Maybe it has to do with the fat content of the different foods we’ve tried.
Because when we feed him the amount they say we’re supposed to, he gains more weight. When we feed him less, his weight looks better, but then not only does the vet tells us it’s not enough food for him, Lucas also acts like it’s not enough food (I know… of course, he acts like that!). But still, Weird!
The veterinarian did do some bloodwork to check for thyroid problems or anything like that, but everything was normal. I was almost hoping there would be some sort of simple explanation for this. Then he could be prescribed some medicine and that would be that. Problem solved. Sort of.
Instead, the vet gave us a prescription diet food for him. But, of course, he doesn’t like it. He says “I’m not eating that diet stuff. I don’t need that.” Haha. But anyways, he doesn’t really like it at all. So we’re on a search to find just the right food for him. The vet did tell us how many calories he should be having. So we’ve been looking at all different foods checking the calories, checking the fat content, and checking the amount of protein in them (Because we have also heard that most foods do not have the amount of protein that dogs need).
But even that is not making any sense to us. A can of dog food in the morning and a can of dog food at night, plus the treats he has, which seems like plenty of food, does not even come close to how many calories he should be having. Regardless, I don’t think we should feed him any more than that. I know I’m not a vet or anything, but I also know it won’t do any good for him to become more overweight than he is now.
In other blog posts, I’ve mentioned the oil veterinarian that I took a class from on how to use essential oils with animals She had a whole list of healthy dog foods that she recommends.… some raw, some freeze dried. Some canned, etc. After checking the ingredients, fat content, and protein content on all of them, I finally chose one that was low in fat and higher in protein. It’s called Weruva and I just purchased a variety pack and it’s on the way! Not all of the Weruva brand dog foods were as low in fat as the Barons Batch variety pack, which seemed like a really good one.
I’ll be sure to write about this dog food and how Lucas likes it after it arrives and he gives it a try! Of course, the ideal situation would be that he loves it and loses weight at the same time. We’ll see!
