My dog had an appointment with a mobile veterinarian yesterday. I thought he might be a little calmer at home than he is when we take him in.  He wasn’t. He really hates everything they have to do, including blood work, vaccinations, and nail trimmings.  And he is extremely vocal about it. It also takes 3 people to hold him still during it all.  Still, though, it was pretty convenient. I should have tried some essential oil softgels to help calm him. I will next time!  If you would like to hear more about using essential oils with animals, just let me know. I took a course given by a veterinarian who uses oils in her practice and I am now a certified animal aromatherapist.

Anyway, she is the second vet to tell us that she would never recommend grain-free dog food. This is interesting, because when you go to the store, practically all of them are grain-free. Now I’m not sure what other veterinarians would say, but she told us studies have shown that grain-free dog food can cause heart problems. I think it’s important information to know and to ask your own veterinarian about. Royal Canin, Iams, and Purina are the brands she recommended and with grains, not grain free.

Our kitty cat, Cooper, is pretty fussy when it comes to his food. He’ll like a certain brand for a little while, but then he doesn’t like it anymore. It’s been tough to find a brand that he consistently likes.  Right now we’re giving him Iams Perfect Portions and he seems to like it.  We also like it, because the portions are a nice size for him (hence the name, Perfect Portions). Therefore, there is much less waste, since he’s not a big eater. We also give him Purina ONE +Plus Indoor Advantage with Real Salmon Natural Adult Dry Cat Food, which he often seems to like more than he likes the wet food.

Sammy mostly loves worms including mealworms, superworms, and hornworms. She may eat a few Dubia roaches if we mix them in with the worms. 🐛 She hardly likes any salad at all, which is really too bad because she’s supposed to have some every day. She does love dandelion flowers though. It’s just too bad that the season for these flowers is so short. I really wish we could grow them all year long. But my favorite place to order from for Sammy is dubiaroaches.com. They have a great selection of bugs of all kinds and they are always in good shape when they arrive. A couple of times when some of the bugs did arrive dead, they are always happy to give a refund or ship out some more. I’ve never had any problems with them at all. Dubiaroaches.com doesn’t just carry insects, but all types of supplies for your reptiles. I got Sammy’s 120 gallon tank from them at a really good price. In fact, all their prices are really good!  If you would like to place an order with them, click here for a 15% off coupon on your first order.

Matilda on the other hand loves her salads. I never knew before we got her that tortoises need a very low protein diet. Her favorite veggies, are kale, radicchio, and endive. But she’ll also eat arugula and cilantro.  I know different types of hay are good for her, but she doesn’t seem to really like any. She might chew on a little piece once in a while though. She also won’t eat any of the pellets or treats that you can buy at the pet store, which I guess is pretty common. Obviously, we have to buy greens for Matilda at the grocery store. But for the other pets, I love Chewy. Chewy is definitely my favorite place to buy everything for our cat and dog. They also carry worms for Sammy. It’s great to be able to get everything in one place, plus their customer service is amazing!  We do also use Petsmart, who has free same day delivery!
