Bearded dragons may look like little desert dinosaurs, but the way they come into the world is even more amazing. From underground nests to their first tiny steps, the journey of a baby beardie is full of natural wonder. Let’s explore how these adorable reptiles begin life!

🥚 It All Begins With Eggs

Female bearded dragons lay eggs in underground nests.
After digging a burrow in soft dirt or sand, the mother carefully deposits 15–30 eggs, covers them, and then leaves them to develop on their own.

There’s no parental care in the wild—little dragons must rely on instinct from the very beginning.

The Incubation Phase

Once buried, the eggs incubate for 55–75 days.
Temperature is key:

  • Warmer temperatures → faster hatching

  • Cooler temperatures → slower development

Unlike some reptiles, a bearded dragon’s sex is not determined by temperature—it’s entirely genetic.

🐣 The Hatching Process

When the babies are ready, they use a special tool nature gave them: a tiny egg tooth.
This small, sharp nub on their snout helps them crack the shell.

Hatching can take anywhere from 12 to 48 hours, as the baby slowly cuts a small hole, rests, and then continues working its way out.

🦎 Meet the Babies

A freshly hatched bearded dragon is:

  • About 3–4 inches long

  • Fully formed

  • Independent from the very first breath

They don’t rely on their mother at all.
Within hours, they’re exploring their environment and hunting tiny prey.

🍽️ First Meals

Baby dragons eat tiny insects such as:

  • Pinhead crickets

  • Small roaches

  • Tiny worms

They’ll also sample soft greens.
During their first few months, they grow incredibly fast—sometimes doubling in size in just weeks!

🌿 Life in the Wild

In nature, survival is tough. Only a small percentage of hatchlings reach adulthood due to predators and harsh environments.

But in captivity, with proper care, baby bearded dragons thrive—and grow into the friendly, curious companions so many people love.
