These little nighttime wanderers are far more helpful than they are harmful. In fact, possums quietly do a lot of good for the environment—and even for people. To give you an idea, let’s hear it straight from the possum’s point of view…

“Hi, I’m a possum! A lot of people think I’m scary or a troublemaker, but the truth is, I’m actually really helpful.  Every night, I eat up to 2,000 ticks, plus other insects that carry diseases. Think of me as nature’s pest control service.

I also help keep snake populations in check—even the venomous ones.  My body is built tough enough to survive bites from rattlesnakes and coral snakes, and yes, I’ll even eat them when I get the chance.

Here’s something most people don’t know: my blood has a special quality that scientists have used to help develop treatments for snake bites. Without me, there would be more pests, more snakes, and fewer life-saving medical discoveries.

So if you see me out at night, especially with my babies riding on my back, please remember—I’m not here to cause harm. I’m just quietly doing my part to keep the world a little safer and healthier for everyone.”

So, as you can see, possums  play a huge role in keeping the world balanced—eating pests, helping control snakes, and even contributing to medical science. The next time you see one, I hope you’ll look at it with a little more appreciation. They’re not just surviving alongside us—they’re helping us in ways most people never realize.
